Common Reasons You May Need a Crown
A crown is usually the go-to solution for a severely damaged tooth. It can seal and support your tooth’s structure to protect it from further damage.
We also recommend crowns for teeth damaged by facial trauma. If you have a cracked tooth, the crack may grant bacteria direct access to the inner structure of the tooth. In this situation, immediate treatment is necessary before significant health concerns arise.
What Issues Can a Crown Fix?
A crown fixes various dental problems and can improve your bite and appearance. Reasons you might need a crown include:
- Restoring a moderately to severely decayed tooth
- The need for cosmetic enhancement to make teeth look better
- Fixing a broken or fractured tooth
- Sealing a tooth after root canal therapy
- Completing a dental implant
CEREC Same-Day Crowns for Fast Fixes
Unlike traditional crowns, Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics (CEREC) crowns do not use dental molds. Our CEREC machine only uses 3D digital scans to produce your customized veneers, crowns, bridges, and clear aligner trays that match the exact shape and size of your teeth.
Our staff will take digital impressions and x-rays of the affected tooth and instantly send the images to the CEREC machine to create your crown.
Top 7 Benefits of CEREC Restorations
If you need a ceramic restoration, CEREC may be of great benefit to you. CEREC restorations are very durable, and recent research indicates they may last for more than ten years.
Top advantages of CEREC restorations include:
- No need to use temporary restorations - You get your restoration on the same day, so no need to use a temporary crown.
- Durable, high-quality ceramic products – We use high-quality ceramic materials to produce sustainable restorations that endure wear and tear.
- Minimally invasive – It doesn’t require molds. It uses only digital imaging
- Involves fewer dental visits – Since you get your crown during the same visit, you won’t need to make multiple appointments.
- Cost-effective – It is done inside our clinic, no need to use a lab.
- Saves more of the natural tooth structure – The machine produces exact imaging that helps the dentist save more of your teeth.
- Safe – The CEREC machine uses biocompatible materials to craft your crown.
What Does a CEREC procedure involve?
Step 1: Depending on your specific situation, our team will use one of two CEREC imaging solutions. CEREC Omnicam takes several images of the tooth and sends a three-dimensional colored model to the CEREC machine. CEREC Bluecam transmits images to the computer screen for our dentist to see all angles of the tooth and design the final restoration.
Step 2: Dr. Reyes will help you choose ceramic that matches your teeth’s color, then inserts a block of ceramic into the milling machine to create your full crown, bridge, or veneer.
Step 3: We will then perform a dry fit to ensure comfort before affixing the restoration to the tooth. Once we establish the perfect fit, our skilled dentist will polish and secure your restoration with dental cement.
For implant-supported crowns and bridges, we use a local lab that produces high-quality restorations suitable for affixing to dental implants.
Do You Perform Tooth Extractions?
At Eastwood Dental, we have a conservative approach, so tooth extraction is always a last resort when there is no other solution. Our team will typically try to restore your natural tooth structure as much as possible. If it is necessary, we will extract the severely damaged tooth to protect the rest of your teeth.
Does Same-Day Crowns Require Special Care?
Similar to traditional crowns, same-day crowns need proper care to last longer. Good oral hygiene involves brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, and regular professional cleanings at our practice. We recommend you never use your teeth for opening packages, and if you decide to play vigorous sports, always wear a mouthguard.
If you have multiple crowns in a row, be sure to pay attention to the area between the crowns when brushing your teeth.
